Books for Summer

Summer books, 2017

Don’t put off buying textbooks. You MUST have them when the class they are for starts, and you know getting a good price often means settling for rather slow shipping, so don’t delay!

None of these books are “text books;” they are all “trade books” – the type of books that practicing teachers have on their shelves to refer to regularly. These texts have been chosen specifically to form the foundation for the library of practical books on teaching you will gather over the years. I’ve gone to great lengths to choose texts that are less expensive whenever possible including texts that are available as eBooks and even a few that are free downloads. Furthermore, we’ll continue using the books after the semester they are assigned. Because of this, please don’t rent, borrow, share, or check out books from the library (although buying used is great). These are books you really need to own. If at any point you are struggling to purchase books because of financial difficulties, please let me know.

Please be very careful to purchase only texts with the same ISBN number listed; you will be extremely frustrated if you don’t get the version the rest of the class is using.

You will almost certainly need to buy a license for the ePortfolio system all the students in the College of Education are required to use, but don’t buy it just yet. Do put aside $100 (I don’t think it is actually that much, but better to put aside too much than too little), and I'll let you know as soon as possible if you should go ahead and get it before the first day of class.

Prices below are the current prices on new books from Amazon, and of course those are subject to change, but I wanted to give you a ballpark view of prices. Our bookstore is good about stocking used books, so check them out.  They should have the main course texts in by late May, but I don't generally ask them to carry the books that are specific only to one of the subject areas.

Besides Amazon, MATs in the past have said they like to look for books at...
thriftbooks.com
textbooks.com
bigwords.com
chegg.com
half.ebay.com
alibris.com

There is also an extension you can install on the browser Chrome called “OccupyTheBookstore” that compares prices on a bunch of different sites I think, (kind of like Kayak for books?)
